Neighbors Helping Neighbors – Living Safe And Secure
26th Annual National Night Out (NNO) is August 4, 2009. This is an event that is all about Neighbors Helping Neighbors – Living Safe And Secure. NNO is about crime and drug prevention and helping to make our community safe and secure. It will involve 15,000 communities from all 50 states. In all 37 million people are expected to participate in America’s National Night Out Against Crime.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts like Neighborhood Watch; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know we are organized and fighting back.
From 7 to 10PM on August 4th, residents in neighborhoods throughout Rancho Bernardo and the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with your neighbors. Neighborhood Watch Block Captains will be organizing a variety of special events to help us get to know each other through block parties, cookouts, flashlight walks, etc. Let’s make High Country West rock on August 4th with block parties and events all over the neighborhood. Go to a party, meet your neighbors and offer to help them in emergencies or to watch their property when they are away from home. We can’t help each other to reach our goals if we don’t know each other and don’t know each other’s needs.
Watch for an invitation to attend a NNO party or event on August 4th or volunteer to host a block party. Call Les Armstrong, 675-0363, or email him at armstjl@earthlink.net to volunteer or for information. You can help yourselves and the neighborhood by attending a party!
Water and Gas Shut Off Valves: Do you know how to turn your water and gas off in the event of an emergency like a broken water line or gas leak? You should figure it out if you don’t know for the safety of your family and your neighbors. Ask a neighbor if you don’t know the answer.
Fire Extinguisher: Do you know how to use your fire extinguisher? Think of PASS. The P stands for PULL the pin of the fire extinguisher. The A stands for AIM the fire extinguisher at the fire. The S stands for SQUEEZE the trigger. The last S stands for SWEEP the fire extinguisher over the base of the fire. Only consider putting out a small fire, if it is a big fire call 911 immediately.
Help Wanted! If you want to help or have suggestions for improving our Neighborhood Watch program or want to get involved, email Les Armstrong at armstjl@earthlink.net. We always have room for more volunteers to make our community safe and secure.
The mission of Neighborhood Watch is to support safety and security efforts for all Rancho Bernardo residents. It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors live safe and secure.

Past Events
Great Southern California Shake Out was on November 13, 2008 in High Country West.
The mission of Neighborhood Watch is to provide safety, security and support for all Rancho Bernardo residents. It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors live safe and secure.
On November 13th each of you had the opportunity to participate in the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history called the Great Southern California Shake Out. Millions of people had a major Drop, Cover, and Hold drill at 10:00 AM. You can go to www.ShakeOut.org for more information.
Then at 7:00 PM we had an After Shock drill to test our HCW Neighborhood Watch Emergency Disaster Alert System. Neighbors checked on their neighbors to see if they were okay. If you put a white cloth or white hangar on your door your neighbors knew that you were okay and passed by your house to go and check on the others. You could also put another color on the reverse side of the hangar to notify people that you need help. After all of the homes on your block had been checked, your block captain reviewed the needs of the people on your block and then notified the official at the club for help. Your block captains welcomed your help in this drill.
Shake Out was an opportunity to practice how to protect ourselves in earthquakes, and to get more prepared. Please reach out to your family and neighbors to prepare for the real thing. If you have any questions or comments, you may email Galen Peterson at gnpeterson@sbcglobal.net or call him at (858) 487-7000.
The HCW Picnic on July 19 was a great success. Our volunteers answered questions about NHW leadership, and we collected some missing contact information on residents for notification in emergency. A few residents volunteered to assist with the NHW program also. It’s all about Neighbors Helping Neighbors to be safe and secure in HCW. Thank you for giving us important information to help us help you.
Block Captain Training was September 3, 2008, 6:30-8:30PM at the HCW Community Center. All leaders involved or interested in NHW were invited to attend this important training seminar. We had pizza and drinks at 6:30PM. NOTE: This was a change so you could come straight from work. We provided important information to help you take care of your family and neighbors in emergencies. This was an opportunity to meet other NHW leaders and get equipped to help your family and neighbors get better equipped to make our neighborhood more safe and secure. Les Armstrong at armstjl@earthlink.net handled registrations for this Seminar. Cutoff for registration was September 1.
